GRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES

Arctic permafrost, vegetation and water quality (MSc and PhD opportunities - Queen's University)

Linking hydrological processes to biotic indicators in a large regional forest (MSc - Trent University)

Science Horizons Youth Internship Position: Cold-Regions Hydrology Internship(University of Victoria)

MSc & PhD opportunities - Queen's University

The Department of Geography at Queen’s University has opportunities for Ph.D. and M.Sc. research projects investigating the landscape controls over permafrost disturbance and the impact of disturbances on vegetation and water quality across physiographic gradients in the Canadian High Arctic. More specifically, investigators are seeking a M.Sc. student interested in investigating how dissolved ion and nutrient concentrations in stream and soils relate to physiographic features such as soil properties, bedrock, vegetative cover, and the depth of the seasonal active layer. The project is also looking for a Ph.D. candidate to evaluate the sediment transport and water quality variability over a wide spectrum of watershed characteristics and varying degrees of permafrost disturbance extent and age.

Qualified students would have a background in environmental earth science, physical geography or geochemistry, an aptitude for field-based research, and a strong academic record. Applicants should be available to commence fieldwork in May 2011, and begin their graduate program in September 2011. Successful applicants would be funded by through a combination of scholarships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships. Interested individuals should contact Dr. Melissa Lafrenière at melissa.lafreniere@queensu.ca for more information on the research projects or application procedures.

MSc - Trent University

We are seeking a MSc graduate student to work as part of a multidisciplinary team on an NSERC-funded strategic research program in the area of Healthy Environments and Ecosystems. The successful applicant will be working with academics and other students from a wide range of academic backgrounds as well as with land managers and government scientists, all with interests in forest hydrology and ecology. The project brings together hydrology, soil science and invertebrate and avian ecology to examine the linkages between forest types, hydrological conditions and invertebrate and avian biodiversity in a forest landscape. The overall goal is to understand how forest insect and avian biodiversity and potential tree growth respond to climate-change induced variation in soil moisture. The graduate position would be based at Trent University as part of the Environmental and Life Sciences (ENLS) Graduate Program. Financial support will be provided through a combination of research and teaching assistantships. Interested candidates should have a background in environmental science and/or physical geography and be able to develop and conduct independent scientific research. For more information on the ENLS graduate program at Trent University please see http://www.trentu.ca/els/.

The position would ideally begin between January and September 2009. For consideration, please send a letter of intent, a statement of interests, a c.v., and the contact information for 3 references to:

Internship - University of Victoria

Environment Canada's Science Horizons Program is a collaborative effort with Canadian universities, the private sector and other non-government organizations which offer promising young scientists and post-secondary graduates hands-on experience working on environmental projects under the mentorship and coaching of experienced scientists and program managers. We seek an intern with a basic background in hydrology, climatology or a related geosciences field. Skills in Geographic Information System (e.g. ArcGIS) and various database platforms (e.g. Excel, Access, MatLab) would be an asset. he successful intern will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists located at the Water & Climate Impacts Research Centre (a centre jointly supported by the University of Victoria and the National Water Research Institute of Environment Canada) who are working on national and international ssessments of coldregions hydrology and effects of climate. Primary duties include: (1) hydrometric and climatic data archival and extraction; (2) development and maintenance of a database; (3) data analysis and (4) completion of a report. This 6 month internship position, located in Victoria, British Columbia, begins September/October, 2010. Candidates must have graduated from a recognized post-secondary academic institution in one of the environmental or related disciplines. A complete description of the Science Horizons program may be found at: http://www.ec.gc.ca/sci_hor/.
